This movie is set somewhere in the 13th century when Jalaluddin Khilji (Raza Murad) of Khilji Dynasty from Afgahnistan wanted to conquer Delhi. His nephew Alauddin Khilji( Ranveer Singh) gets married to Mehrunissa (Aditi Rao Hydari). But in actual he is a womanizer.
On the other hand Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) the king of Mewar falls in love with a beautiful princess from Singhal Dynasty Padmaavati (Deepika Padukone) who saves his life during hunting and gets married to her. After marriage Padmaavati becomes the second princess of Mewar after Ratan Singh's first wife Nagmati (played by new actor Anupriya Goenka).
The priest of Mewar is awestruck by Padmaavati's beauty but is punished and asked to leave Mewar when he tries to enter into the private moments of Rawal Singh and Padmaavati.
Meanwhile in Delhi Jalaluddin Khilji is stabbed by the Alauddin who now becomes the King of the Khilji Dynasty. The priest then lands up at Alauddin's court where he gives a description of Padmaavati's beauty to Alauddin and tells him as to how he can make her the queen.
What happens next one must be very familiar with the story and for that you will have to watch the movie.
The movie is based on Rani Padmaavati of Chittor. The screenplay is good but could have been better considering its a movie based on history of Rani Padmaavati. The screen presence of Alauddin could have been reduced. The Jauhar scene is well shot. There is nothing in the movie which created so much of controversy.
Of the performances this is Deepika's career best performance as Queen Padmavati after Piku. Won't be surprised if she sweeps the awards this year. Shahid Kapoor is also brilliant as Ratan Singh. Ranveer Singh is fierce and menacing as the villain Alauddin Khilji and gives a great performance as well. Anupriya Goenka is good. Aditi Rao Hydari in a small and brief role also leaves a mark. Jim Sarbh is also very good. Other supporting actors are good as well.
The music of the movie as usually heard in Bhansali movies is very good especially Ghoomar and Ek Dil Ek Jaan.
Direction of Bhansali is good but could have been better. The costumes and movie sets are amazing and full of grandeur.
Overall Padmaavat is another good movie of Bhansali which deserves to be watched as it depicts the story of Rani Padmaavati' s courage, valour and sacrifice
