The movie revolves around Vadodara in Gujarat where Insia a teenager studying in a school has dreams of becoming a singer. Insia (Zaira Wasim) gets encouragement and support to pursue her dreams from her mother Najma (Meher Vij), but her father Farookh (played by Raj Arjun) is conservative and is against the daughter purusing her dreams. He also puts restrictions on his family members including his wife.
Insia also has a friend Chintan (Tirth Sharma) who is very supportive, likes her and is ready to do anything for her so as to make her happy and help her pursue her dreams.
She uploads her video on you tube with her face covered with burqa to keep her identity as a secret. She becomes an overnight sensation for her voice with over a million hits across the globe on You Tube and other social networking websites like Twitter and others.
Insia comes across Shakti Kumar (Aamir Khan) a music director from Mumbai who is having his own family problems and is known in the media for the wrong reasons.
Will Shakti Kumar be able to realise the true potential of Insia? Will Insia be able to fulfiill her dreams? What will happen if Insia's father comes to know of her dreams? Will her mother continue to support Insia inspite of her father's restrictions? For that you will have to watch the movie.
The movie is gripping right from the beginning to the end with a tight screenplay.
The music of the movie is amazing, melodious and probably one of the best soundtracks of the year. It is also in sync with the movie. All credit to Amit Trivedi, one of his best so far. The lyrics are also nicely penned by Kausar Munir. Even the new sensation Meghna Mishra who has lent her voice to Insia is a talent to watch out for and is a hit with this movie.
Zaira Wasim as Insia is the star of the movie and she does a brilliant job which is also one of the movie's strengths. She holds her own despite having big actors like Aamir Khan and emerges a winner. Credit to Aamir Khan for realising her potential and bringing her forward in this movie and him taking a backseat. Meher Vij as her mother has also acted well and lends great support to her daughter. The other supporting performances of Tirth and Insia' s brother are also very good. Aamir Khan also does a great job in a cameo as the struggling music director. The father Raj Arjun also does a fine job as the conservative father of Insia.
Secret Superstar is a movie about pursuing dreams and has that old world feel to it which is well written and directed by first time director Advait Chandan.
Aamir Khan the perfectionist can do no wrong and has once again after Dangal given a strong message through this movie to the society.
Overall Secret Superstar should be watched for its theme, starcast and performances. It is for all age groups including family audiences.
